Co-Op Country Store
We are a Farm, Home & Hardware Store Cooperative celebrating 80+ years of neighbors helping neighbors!
The CO-OP Country Store is part of the CO-Op Gas & Supply Co., Inc., one of the oldest cooperatives in the greater Sandpoint /Ponderay area.
It began in 1934 with more than 60 people in Bonner County each purchasing a $10.00 share of stock to provide a financial base for the new company, Grange Gas & Supply. Initially the company only sold product to the grange members, but that changed within the first year. Now anyone can purchase from the CO-OP and there is still an opportunity to become a member free of charge.
Originally located at 5th and Church in Sandpoint, Idaho, the store built a feed mill, warehouse, service station, and acquired the Sandpoint Creamery in 1943. A grain elevator was added the same year as well as the powder magazine. In 1947 a petroleum plant was erected west of the grain elevator.
The cooperative grew under the careful management of Jack Murry. Jack expanded the company to include hardware and farm supplies. The Husky service station on Pine and 5th was purchased and converted into a 24 hour card-trol fueling facility. This facility no longer exists as it was removed to make way for a parking lot at 5th and Pine.
The CO-OP Country Store moved to its present location, 125 Tibbetts Lane in Ponderay, in 1996. This move allowed for a larger , covered fueling station which could accommodate bigger rigs and equipment as well as an 8 pump fueling station for smaller road vehicles. The CO-OP has further expanded to include much more than hardware, fuel, and feed, and has be come the largest cooperative of its kind in North Idaho.
Cooperatives operate on the Rochdale Principles:
- Open voluntary membership
- Democratic Control
- Limited return if any on equity capital
- Net surplus belongs to user-owners
- Cooperation among cooperatives
The CO-OP has voting members which are producers. They build stock in this company by making purchases here. In the begining only members could shop here, but that has changed and now anyone can enjoy the savings at the CO-OP.
Like the General Store of old we have almost everything for Farm & Home. Our hardware sections are second to none in the area and our personal attention to each customer is well known. We even take your order to your vehicle at no extra charge. That's just one way the CO-OP is set apart from other farm stores.
We are spacious. The CO-OP houses more than 20 departments inside the 19,000+ square foot store. That does not include the three fuel pump stations or the massive warehouse spaces. See our department pages for more information.
We understand the people who live and work here. They are just like us. We understand the problems involved with doing life in North Idaho. Energy concerns affect us too. Agricultural challenges are the same for employees at the CO-OP. That's why we constantly further our education to find the answers we need to help our customers. We put up hay, we have to choose the right fertilizers and seeds for the area, and our livestock need the same health and nutritional care as the livestock of our customers. We even have some employees who live off the grid. They understand about the challenges facing off the grid residents and are happy to help in any way possible with information and experience.
Whatever you need for farm and home, the CO-OP can help. We also tend to be a clearinghouse for information pertaining to farm and home so if you have any questions don't hesitate to give us a call at 263-6820. If we don't have the answer to your query we can find it.
